Indonesia 2004
The UN WFP – Indonesia and Sumatra
In early January, we mobilised within a few days in support of the UN World Food Programme (UN WFP) to assist with a Rescue Relief operation after the devastating tsunami ravaged Indonesia and Sumatra. Three Puma J helicopters were deployed simultaneously in an AN124 freighter from Spain, reassembled and were certified to fly by the UN and local SA CAA, becoming fully operational on 15 January.
We flew in extreme weather conditions with the primary role of carrying of passengers and freight, and rescue and medevac flights. The operation also included onsite maintenance and logistical support. In excess of 950 hours was flown during a 5-month period.
