- Took place during the Anglo-Zulu War
- Fought on the same day as the nearby Battle of Isandlwana
- Fighting the Zulu army of King Cetshwayo, the British army suffered the most humiliating defeat in its history

THE SIEGE OF LADYSMITH
- Began when the Boers cut the railway and telegraph lines on 2 November 1899
- General Joubert pushed General White’s army into Ladysmith and laid siege to it at the beginning of the South African War
- The attack lasted for 118 days – the shortest of the three major sieges in South African history
- Suffering during the siege was intense given the shortage of provisions
